Elisabeth Freeman

Elizabeth Freeman (Mum Bett) was soposibly born in 1742 as a slave. As a slave she married and her husband died in the revolutionary war so it was just her and her daughter, Little bett. a famous quote she said was "Any time, any time while I was a slave, if one minute's freedom had been offered to me, and I had been told I must die at the end of that minute, I would have taken it. Just to stand one minute on god's aarth a free woman. I would." After being treated unfairly she asked Theordore Sedgewick to sue for her freedom She had overheard discussion of the new Massachusetts state constitution and the Bill of Rights, that all people were born free and equal. She believed those laws applied to her, too! Along with her Sedgewick help another slave from the plantaion she worked on named Brom.  Mum Bett and Brom were the first African American slaves to be freed under the Massachusetts constitution of 1780! After she was freed she protested for African slavory. If it wasnt for her we may not have had african freedom today. Freeman died December 28, 1829,Stockbridge, Massachusetts. We have to thank her for the way she stood up to african slavory. She was a huge part of american revolution and always will be!
